What Is A Mobile Website?

Many people believe they have a mobile website, because their website doesn't have absence parts when loading from a  mobile device. This is false, and we're here to show you why!

A mobile website is a website that is built specifically to function and display on mobile devices. While some websites will load fine on newer smartphones like the iPhone, the website still might not be a "mobile website".

Websites designed and developed specifically for mobile devices are generally very basic and to the point. They also feature technologies that are compatible with mobile devices, and leave out technologies that aren’t, such as Flash.

Many companies suffer from missing out on potential customers and clients due to flash websites, or having major components that are flash. That means your website that you paid thousands and thousands for just months ago, won't load when visitors on the go try to access your website via iPhones, or when john doe sits down on his couch and picks up his iPad to surf the web and do some research on you and your competition.

Mobile websites are also generally scaled down content-wise to feature content that is more relative to the user on the go. An example of this would be a restaurant making their menu more prominent.

Take a look at the example below of what a restaurant website looks like in a web browser, compared to a mobile browser.

Normal Web-Based Website:

Aside from page content, it’s also very important that all of your contact information is easily accessible via the mobile website. Having your address(s), phone number(s), and social media profile links are a great way to make sure if a customer is trying to contact you on the go, that they aren’t scrambling to find the information.

it's also important to note that the screenshot above reflects a mobile website and not an app. A lot of people see the above, or picture it in there head and believe you need an app to display your content like that. Again, false.

A mobile website is accessed from a mobile browser, such as Safari on the iPhone (seen above). An app must be purchased from an App Store and downloaded onto your phone.

A mobile website outweighs an app by a long shot when trying to reach your customers on the go. Usually when on the go, potential visitors are going directly to your website to look for information (such as a menu), or they are searching in Google and seeing what's around them (such as Sushi in Rochester, NY).

Now, who do you think is more likely to get the customer -- the restaurant with the flash website that doesn't load a single menu item, hours or address, or the company with the mobile website with full, quick access to menus and contact information.
