Choosing the right type of hosting for your new website

So, you’ve finally gotten your new website through the development phase and you are ready to go “live”- congratulations! Now, you need to ensure that your new website is online for your visitors 24/7/365. A key advantage to a website is that it is essentially a salesperson for your company. Reliable web hosting means that your new salesperson is always in the office helping customers 100% of the time. No breaks, vacations or sick days!

Let’s go thru some basics. When you purchase web hosting, you are renting what is called a server (a high performance computer) inside a data center. The data center provides fail-safe power and cooling, extremely high speed internet access, and physical security to your server. Sure, you could purchase an expensive server and keep it at your business- but what happens to your website when your internet goes down, power goes out, or even if someone breaks in at night and steals your brand new $12,000 server? Your new salesperson is AWOL to your customers!

There are three basic types of web hosting we typically recommend and support for our clients: shared hosting, dedicated hosting and cloud hosting:

Shared hosting is the cheapest option, but it has its drawbacks. Shared means exactly that- instead of just your one website on a server, you actually share the whole server with up to 500 other websites. Think of shared hosting as an apartment building. You have a one bedroom apartment, and you can have a few friends over comfortably- but don’t wake the neighbors with loud music! But, what happens when you want to throw a huge party (say, after your website was advertised on the Super Bowl)? You can’t cram 500 people into your apartment. That is where the next two hosting types come in.

Dedicated hosting means you have your own server, 100% exclusive to your website. Instead of your one-bedroom apartment with shared hosting, you now have your own 3 bedroom house complete with a huge yard and your neighbors are far away- play all the loud music you want! Your new house can have a ton of people over comfortably- however, you still have a limit to the amount of people that can visit at any one time. However, there are still some advantages over the next type of hosting.

Cloud hosting is really a hybrid of shared and dedicated. Think of cloud as living in a hotel. Your hotel suite is a lot bigger than your apartment, but not the size of your house. But, here’s the catch- your hotel lease arrangement allows you to use the hotel conference rooms and resort for the day for only a few dollars! You can throw a huge party and comfortably handle your visitors and then just go back to your hotel room when it’s over.
